An Underappreciated and Superior Version
Valmont is the unfortunate step-child version of Les Liaisons dangereuses that was produced around the same time as the better publicized Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich. Firth plays a much more sensual and sympathetic Vicomte de Valmont, and the fact that he and Meg Tilly fell in love during the filming of Valmont (they later had a son together and remain good friends) makes their scenes all the more touching. Firth and Tilly are exquisite together in the dancing and the passionate reunion scenes. Grab a quilt and cup of cocoa and spend a quiet evening with this film. I enjoy it more each time I see it.
